In The Bean Trees, Marietta embarks on a journey and leaves her hometown of Pittman, Kentucky. She acquires a new identity as Taylor Greer and a child by the time she reaches “Jesus is the Lord Tires” in Tuscon, Arizona. After experiencing many hardships, she meets Lou Ann Ruiz. They form an immediate bond as single mothers struggling to provide for their children. Taylor sets out to discover Turtle's true identity after social services discover she has no legal rights to Turtle. Although Turtle's identity is never discovered, she is given the identity of Taylor's daughter. All of the people in this story are bound together by a sense of family and belonging. Who they are is reflected in what they do and to whom or what they are committed. They overcome their obstacles with the help of each other.
The Bean Trees shows a lot about America and how people lived during this time. America was struggling with the economy. Most people in this story were in need of money and some in need of jobs. Single parenting was a hardship with which many mothers had to deal. Another issue that was a big part of this book was illegal immigration. The book tells of a journey of two illegal immigrants trying to escape to the free land of Cherokee Nation. During this time period, every day life was filled with hardships and worries.
